Two Ashby-businesses put minds together for charity fundraiser

The Optimised Group, with offices in Leicestershire, Blackpool, Bristol, Dumfries & London, have challenged staff to a “Grand Tour” travelling the distance from London to Cape Town, within six weeks, in an effort to raise money for mental health charity; Mind.

Following a difficult year, with the uncertainty of COVID-19 and its subsequent lockdowns, people’s mental health – particularly across the UK - took a significant blow. Resulting in a 15% increase in urgent and emergency referrals, from March to July 2020, as well as a total of 2,276 more referrals in July alone, compared to the same month in 2019, according to NHS Digital Figures [1].

As restrictions began to ease in the UK, the Optimised Group decided to set a challenge to their UK-wide staff, to encourage them to exercise for the benefit of their own mental health, with the incentive of raising money for a good cause.

The original challenge, which was to accumulate the distance between the Group’s five UK offices (919 miles) for an initial donation of £1000 to Mind, was smashed within 2 weeks, as the Optimised team racked up 1531 miles.

Calling for the challenge to be toughened, the distance was increased to 6,000 miles, the distance from London to Cape Town, where the Group have had temporary office locations. The incentive? A £2000 donation to Mind.

As restrictions on indoor group exercise relaxed from 17th May, the Optimised Group’s Ashby team, the home of the Optimised Buildings division, looked for a means of increasing their weekly mileage, which they found, in Bluestone Fitness’ new state-of-the-art Spin studio.

Located on Smisby Road, Ashby de la Zouch, Bluestone Fitness upgraded their spin studio during the pandemic, to accommodate for social distancing measures upon reopening. Enhancing their already award-winning health club, boasting a holistic fitness studio, speciality coffee bar, and an array of classes, across their 8,000 sqft facility.

Knowing the importance of looking after mental health, offering health club members with discounted, in-house, Talking Therapy sessions with registered therapists, Bluestone were happy to accommodate their fellow Ashby business, for a 45-minute Spin Class.

Following the class, Gary Bark, Director at the Optimised Group, commented:

“It was a fantastic opportunity to be able to team up with Bluestone Fitness for our charity fundraiser. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a drastic effect on people’s mental health, and as we all know, fitness has been critical in reviving the public’s wellbeing, which Bluestone have been pivotal in doing for the local community.
Of course, there’s been a considerable drive to support local businesses throughout the pandemic, so it was great to be able to work with Danny and Bluestone for an amazing cause.”

Daniel Ball, owner of Bluestone Fitness, had this to say:

“We were very pleased to be able to support Optimised Group with their fundraiser for Mind - Our club has a strong link to improving mental wellbeing as well as running Bluestone Counselling Trust, offering subsidised talking therapy sessions for our members. To share this platform with the guys from Optimised and raise funds for this cause was something we jumped at!”
